The new bottling of the NV Reliquia Palo Cortado comes in a small bottle with a handmade and different label every year (so, each year the Palo Cortado is different in style and all the labels in that bottling are slightly different, as they are painted by hand by the artist, but in the same style). These are wines that, unless something very strange happens, are not going to show any differences, because the rotation of wine in the bottles is really small, as they all have their soleras and criaderas because of how the system is managed, especially in the case of the Palo Cortado, which is the more abundant of these Reliquia wines. In any case, these wines can get more concentrated and powerful, but they are already so concentrated and powerful that it is difficult to notice any differences. This wine will outlive us all. Only 80 half bottles are available yearly for the whole world.
Reliquia Amontillado: Parker 98/100
The NV Reliquia Amontillado is an extremely old wine, concentrated from its sheer old age. It wears a mahogany robe with a green rim. The nose is pungent, marine, with noble woods, hazelnuts and a touch of volatility. The palate is quite brutal, verging on the edge of being too much, but without crossing the line. It’s an extreme meditation wine, presented in a glass decanter, and sold in extremely limited quantities. A bottle would last for months (or years), as it should be sipped in very small quantities instead of a Brandy, Cognac or Armagnac. Exceptional.
Barbadillo Reliquia Oloroso Parker 95/100
In the past, I have found the NV Reliquia Oloroso almost painful. There's a new saca or bottling now, presented in November 2020 and now released every year in half bottles with hand-painted (modern) labels. This has an explosion of aromas of low tide, rusty nail, iodine and seaweed, with brutal concentration and acidity (volatile and all) and almost painful concentration with marked bitterness. They do not aim for finesse but for concentration, which is what the oxidative aging was. As Robert Parker would say, it's a wine for masochists. :-) There are 80 half bottles released every year.
